San Pietro: Spiritualità Silenziosa e Vita Rupestre

IT:Alle pendici della Rocca, dove il silenzio invita alla riflessione, sorgeva l’antica comunità dei monaci Basiliani. Questi religiosi scelsero di vivere nelle grotte, lontano dalle distrazioni e dal caos della vita urbana, per dedicarsi interamente alla preghiera e al lavoro. Fu proprio qui che fondarono la Chiesa di San Pietro, un luogo dove la fede si fonde con la pietra viva.

La vita della comunità non era però solo spirituale, ma anche profondamente legata alla terra. In una delle grotte è ancora visibile un frantoio rupestre, testimonianza di un passato operoso dove, con ogni probabilità, i monaci producevano il vino.

Accanto a questo luogo sacro, in tempi più recenti, la storia della comunità si è intrecciata con quella del progresso. Grazie alla posizione elevata e favorevole, fu costruita qui la prima grande cisterna d’acqua di Gagliano Castelferrato, vitale per l'approvvigionamento del paese. Oggi quella cisterna è stata sostituita dal nuovo sistema idrico posizionato ancora più in alto, ma rimane un simbolo di come questo luogo abbia sempre custodito e nutrito la vita dei gaglianesi, ieri con la fede e oggi con le risorse del territorio.

EN: At the slopes of the Rocca, where silence invites reflection, stood the ancient community of Basilian monks. These religious men chose to live in caves, far from the distractions and chaos of urban life, to dedicate themselves entirely to prayer and labor. It was here that they founded the Church of St. Peter, a place where faith blends with the living stone.

The life of the community was not only spiritual, but also deeply connected to the land. In one of the caves, a rock-hewn press is still visible, witnessing a hardworking past where, in all likelihood, the monks produced wine.

Beside this sacred site, in more recent times, the history of the community intertwined with progress. Thanks to the favorable and elevated position, the first large water cistern of Gagliano Castelferrato was built here, vital for the town's supply. Today, that cistern has been replaced by the new water system located even higher up, but it remains a symbol of how this place has always guarded and nourished the lives of Gagliano’s people—yesterday through faith, and today through the resources of the land.
